EXPLAINING SIMPOL FOR THE FIRST TIME
Barnaby suggested people first watch the short films on the web site and to try it out your own way, because, he opined, we learn better by teaching not by being students. He forgot to mention: the FAQ page is very useful for a fuller explanation which is often required. http://simpol.org.uk/faq
PEOPLE’S POLCY
How do think things could and should be?
Sady: Public more informed and involved in decision making
Ryan: Priorities. Local to global policies should start with basic human and planetary needs rather than profit.
Isabel: Social responsibility and participation
Barnaby: Recognising our collective humanity and working together for the common good.
How are global problems affecting you?
Isabel: Moved to Co-operative Bank from Lloyds TSB.
Why? Hike in bank charges.
Probable global cause: Banks can do what they like and we have little say or alternative options. Many people finding The Co-operative Bank a better safer, more ethical bank. Points towards growth in co-operative movement.
Jimothy and Sady: Supermarkets unethical.
Why? Not responsible for CO2 emissions. Green washing. Not taking responsibility but passing the responsibility on to the consumer. “Doing your bit for the environment.”
Probable global cause. Business must green up as little as possible to remain competitive. “Every little piecemeal bit” and promote themselves as being green.
Barnaby: Evident bio-diversity loss.
Why? More pollution. More vehicles. Degradation of environment
Probable global cause: Clamour to pay off debts, out compete competitors and export goods. Continuous growth to pay off debt global debt hole.
Barnaby
Also. Credit crisis. Less money in pocket as work harder.
Why? People have less money and being more cautious
Probable global cause: Credit crunch caused by unregulated financial services. Credit issuance also in hands of private sector. Solution would be greatly assisted by a global simultaneous policy implementation.
POLICES FOR 2010
Barnaby gave a brief overview of the policies which gained approval from the 2009 annual vote. We discussed the new Monetary Reform Policy. Barnaby invited people to view and vote on the policy at: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/simpolicies-general/
